Basic to Intermediate Play
Standard Rock, Paper, Scissors
Learn the basics of Rock, Paper, Scissors by playing against a computer. Select either rock, paper, or scissors, and the computer will randomly choose one as well. Remember: rock beats scissors, scissors beat paper, and paper beats rock.
Variation - Korean Rock, Paper, Scissors
It should come as no surprise that Rock, Paper, Scissors can be found in South Korea. In fact, there are two variations, 가위 바위 보 (Gawi, Bawi, Bo) and 묵찌빠 (Muk, Jji, Ppa). More information about 묵찌빠 can be found on the Challenge page.
In Korean 가위 바위 보, there are three main differences from the US version of Rock, Paper, Scissors:
- Timing - In the US, most people who play Rock, Paper, Scissors throw their hand sign after chanting "Rock, paper, scissors", often accompanied by the word "Shoot." In Korea, the hand sign is thrown as you say the last word of the chant, "Gawi, Bawi, Bo".
- Scissors Sign - Instead of using your index finger and middle finger to make the two blades of scissors, Koreans use their thumb and index finger, in a gun shape, to indicate scissors.
- Ties - In Korean 가위 바위 보, there is no pause or repeat of the chant in the event of a tie. Instead, signs are thrown at the same rhythm of the chant until someone wins. Often, the last word of the chant, "Bo" is said with each thrown hand sign.
11-Object Rock, Paper, Scissors
Getting bored of only having 3 hand signs to choose from? From the creative mind of David Lovelace, we get this variation of Rock, Paper, Scissors using 11 objects. Each object can beat 5 other objects and is beaten by 5 other objects. Hover over each object to see what it beats, and when you click one, the computer will randomly select one as well.
